Based on the 1926 play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, Chicago is one of the most iconic performances of all times. The show unpacks the depth and lengths to which people will go to sustain power.

characters

Including leading roles such as Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly, Billy Flynn, Matron "Mama" Morton, and others, the musical revolves around corruption, betrayal, ambition, and the dark side of fame. Chicago was based on a play of the identical name of Maurine Dallas Watkins, which was inspired by real-life events.

storyline

The tale unfolds with Roxie, a young and ambitious vaudeville performer, who murders her lover "Fred Casely" after he refuses to help her with her vaudeville career, and dismissing their relationship. The story unravels, and Roxie becomes aware of the fame she has attracted as a female criminal. Like Roxie's desire to escape her mundane life, within time Chicago will introduce you to numerous like-minded individuals, with comparable intentions. Among them is Velma, an veteran, confident, sharp-minded, and competitive vaudeville star who killed her husband and sister after finding them in the same bed. However, afterward, she begins to struggle with reclaiming her fame since Roxie has already taken attention from her.

The musical also features Billy Flynn, a deceptive, and charismatic lawyer who is defending Both Roxieand and Velma, who is also extremely driven by wealth, and seemingly indifferent to the justice he is serving. Chicago also turns attention to the other side to showcase that the desire for power isn't only for the privileged, instead it's a part of everyone's uncontrolled shadow, circling back to Matron "Mama" Morton, a tough, sensible, and "a stone cold jail queen", who's not seen reaching the climax but yet is not averse to exploiting situations for personal advantage.

history & awards

It's safe to say Chicago is the musical equivalent of "The Godfather", showcasing the game mankind plays to reach life's climax.
