Stephen Schwartz & Winnie Holzman, creators of Wicked, were motivated by the 1995 Gregory Maguire story "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West".

The broadway musical originally premiered in 2003, making it 21 years old. Since its inception, Wicked has surpassed $1 BILLION in box office sales on Broadway.
