Khaled Hosseini’s tale of a friendship and country divided has made its harrowing statement basked in Broadway lights. Now, this highly regarded stage adaptation of The Kite Runner will tour North American cities this Spring of 2024, kicking off in Tempe, Arizona, followed by stops in more than twenty of the country’s most distinguished theatrical venues. These will include a string of Pittsburgh performances from May 7 to 12 LIVE at the Benedum Center.
Our story begins during a peaceful moment in time in Kabul, Afghanistan, where a young Pashtun boy, Amir, passes his childhood afternoons with his friend Hassan, the son of his father’s Hazara servant. The expanses of a deep, unending sky oversaw the two boys’ escapades sun in and sun out, playing against winds and sunbeams, dodging bullies both crass and cruel, and reading stories of heroes under the comfort of a pomegranate tree.
Then came that fateful day when the watchful heavens hugged legions of ambitious kites during the town’s yearly kite-fighting tournament. To win his father’s approval, Amir sets out to conquer the competition, with the ever-loyal Hassan supporting him with all his might. It was meant to be an afternoon of festivities… Until a gut-wrenching horror descends between Amir and Hassan, tarnishing the brotherhood they once shared. And as the two grow further and further apart, their country teeters closer and closer to the brink of war.
