Stephen Schartz’s genius and aptitude breach generation gaps, from beloved Disney films to pure Broadway enchantment charm. The hit-making virtuoso who brought Godspell and Pippin to the world has now breathed life into Broadway-blockbuster Wicked, which comes to Benedum Center for the winter playbill.
Wicked smartly weaves bureaucratic criticisms, unusual heroes, and unlikely romance within a medley of catchy tracks, including Defying Gravity, which has taken Broadway by storm.
The story follows Elphaba, the illegitimate daughter of the wife of Munchkinland’s governor. Despite her familial and identity struggles, Elphaba makes it into the respected Shiz University, where she rooms with social butterfly Galinda. Two complete opposites hardly get along at first but soon become fond of each other.
After a while, things take a turn for the worse when Elphaba notices nefarious acts against the Animals, a sentient race often tormented by oppressive forces. Galinda and Elphaba go to the Wizard for help, but the Wizard disappointingly offers little assistance. A disillusioned Elphaba leaves the Emerald City to fight for justice for the Animals, leaving Galinda and her studies at Shiz University behind.
Meanwhile, Galinda marries Fiyero, the Captain of the Guard, and pursues an aristocratic lifestyle. Elphaba returns and accidently earns Fiyero’s eye as he falls in love with her and her values. Will the couple’s love blossom unburdened, or will Elphaba’s agenda push Fiyero away, disconnect her from allies, and destroy her?
Wicked kicked off its first live performance 20 years ago at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. As its popularity spread, it made its way into new theatres year after year, receiving international acclaim with performances in London, Ireland, Mexico, Germany, and even Australia. Its capacity to bring in audiences also inspired Hollywood to make a movie based on the Broadway show, that hit cinemas in November 2024.
Wicked scored numerous awards during its heyday in the 2000s, including 2 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Lyrics, 3 Tony awards, and a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album.
