"Six — The Musical" originated as a production by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society in 2017 in the United Kingdom. The buzz of those engagements created an opportunity for a professional production that toured the United Kingdom in 2018.
"Six" made its official premier on London’s West End in 2019. It had a successful run until Covid lockdowns disrupted shows for most of 2020.
However, the musical-comedy persevered to receive favorable reviews and was the subject of many tours across the world. Eventually moving to New York City, where it was the first new show to start performances on Broadway after Covid lockdowns.
It continues to tour across the nation and the world today. An intriguing twist to the development of "Six — The Musical" was that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss used actual popular singers to model the characters. They took inspiration from musicians like Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys during character development.

"Six" is the tale of the lives of the wives of King Henry VIII, who was a controversial king of England in the 1500s. During his nearly four decades as king, he married six times. His desire to annul his first marriage led to the separation of the Church of England. Many people probably know the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not know the story of his many wives. That’s where "Six" enters the picture.
The musical delves into the story of these six queens as they tell their individual experiences with Henry VIII. The queens compete for who had the most awful experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, adultery, and even beheadings in a way that keeps you laughing while also touching your heart. They even place a modern twist on the story by incorporating a dating app in a hilarious way.
Eventually, they realize that arguing over who had the worst time with Henry VIII is pointless. They eventually decide to think about how Henry VIII took their individuality. They’re not just the six wives of Henry VIII - they have their individual strengths that deserve celebrating. The ex-wives eventually work together to write new endings to their lives. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by imagining what their lives would’ve been like without seeing Henry VIII.
