In the middle of social and political discontent in 19th century France, a sentenced criminal going by the name of Jean Valjean escapes his parole after a significant period of time imprisoned. Because of a fortunate, albeit lucky, series of events, he is free to make his next move and creates a brand new identity as Monsieur Madeleine, eventually attaining the positions of a factory owner and a mayor. Though previously successful in building his new life, hidden from his rival Javert, he is inevitably involved in the dangerous political landscape of Paris, France, wherein Valjean is compelled to find answers that would possibly put him and his daughter, Cosette, in danger.
This tale from Victor Hugo's novel, full of sacrifice and passion, has been running for roughly 40 years in multiple theaters in a considerable number of cities globally. Ever since its premiere in French theatre in the 1980s, it has deservingly been referred to not just as one of the most epic musicals of all time, but also part of the most-awarded musicals as well. In its global debut on its own, it dominated the awards season of the Tonys, with 12 nominations in total and 8 wins. Les Mis obtained awards as Best Featured Actor and Actress in a Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Musical. Later on, the box office hit went on to receive awards and commendations in its subsequent productions in Australian, Toronto, and Broadway productions including from the Helpmann Awards, Dora Awards, Green Room Awards, and with no surprise, Tony Awards once more.
Currently, Les Misérables has impacted a whopping number of over 130 million people globally, traveling to 53 countries and produced in a great array of 22 different languages.
