HISTORY
Based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Magure, Wicked has been named as one of the longest running musicals on Broadway. Its latest milestone was passing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats as the fourth longest running musical. The musical premiered in 2003 on Broaday and went on its first North American Tour in 2005. Two decaldes later, the musical is still one of the most in demand productions across the globe! This winter, you get the chance to see the fantastic epic – a masterpiece featuring direction by Tony winning musical director Joe Mantello and book by Drama Desk Award winning playwright Winnie Holzman. The musical also features music and lyrics by multi award winning composer Stephen Schwartz. Other awesome creative minds behind the musical includes Wayne Cilento on musical staging, Eugene Lee on scenic design, Susan Hilferty on costume, Kenneth Posner on lighting, and Tony Meola on sound.
“Broadway’s Biggest Blockbuster.” – New York Times
Wicked secured a ton of prestigious awards after premiering on Broadway in 2003. The original musical, which featured the iconic casts Idinal Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Galinda won three Tony Awards out of ten nominations, seven Drama Desk Awards, a Drama League Award, and four Outer Critics Circle Award. Meanwhile, the official soundtrack of the musical won a Grammy Award for Best Music Show Album.

REVIEWS
“If every musical had the brains, heart & courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place.” – Time Magazine
Besides awards, the production also received a ton of amazing reviews from professional theater and musical critics. The New York Times called Wicked, “Broadway’s Biggest Blockbuster.” There is no doubt about the validity of this statement as Wicked is recorded to be the second highest grossing Broadway musical after Lion King. Meanwhile, Time Magazine lauded the musical for its incredible storyline, “If every musical had the brains, heart & courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place.”
Some more recent reviews were also glowing. Vox ATL sent an avid film fanatic to the musical. So pretty much the show was an uncharted territory for the writer. However, his review had nothing but great words, “And with the magic of the intricate sets, the meticulous costumes, and, of course, the singing, I was spellbound to the edge of my seat.” The writer continued, “To say I was surprised at how much I enjoyed “Wicked” would understate the grin on my face during intermission, and the even wider one when we stood for the final ovation.”
Over at the Guardian, the article acknowledged that the musical is as good as ever. “20 years on, this Wizard of Oz prequel still charms.” The musical was also praised for its outstanding score, “And there’s Stephen Schwartz’s music. It might not be the most inventive Broadway fare, but it’s cleverly structured with an eye to theme, featuring recurring and stirring motif and leitmotif.”
