Synopsis

Set in the colorful and gritty streets of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, the story follows 17-year-old Ali, a spirited teen’s journey of self-discovery amid her cautious single mother’s watchful eye. Follow Ali as she rebels and discovers her musical gift through piano lessons with her wise mentor, Miss Liza Jane, and sparks a romance with street drummer Knuck. Tensions rise with family drama involving her distant father, Davis. Through victories and struggles, Ali learns to accept her voice, her heritage, and the community that defines her. This timeless and relatable coming-of-age journey is packed with defiance, connection, and the power of music.

It premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2023 to widespread praise, extending its run before moving to Broadway in 2024, with previews starting March 28 and an official opening on April 20. The show earned 13 Tony Award nominations in 2024, securing Best Actress in a Leading Role for Maleah Joi Moon and Best Featured Actress for Kecia Lewis. In 2025, it won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
