Described by theater critic Clive Barnes as "…one of the best musicals," the sensational stage show Gypsy comes to Benedum Center on Friday 10th July! With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by the great Stephen Sondheim, it was first staged in 1959. It received acclaim not only for its score, but also its character development and dramatic authenticity. The role of Rose has won three separate actresses a Tony Award, and is lauded as the archetypal portrayal of "the stage mother".Gypsy at Benedum Center

Gypsy tells the tale of a domineering matriarch and her two girls on the path to stardom. Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rosy Lee, the famous striptease artist and movie star of the 1930s and 40s, the story revolves around her mother, Rose and her dreams of raising her children as show business sweethearts in order to live vicariously through them. But will Louise and June find the independence they need to realize their own dreams? And will Rose find the happiness she craves?
